    The German Romantic poet Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg, 1772-1801) is the most mystical of the German Romantic poets. He is at once the most typical and the most unusual of the German Romantics, indeed, of all Romantic poets. His best known work, Hymen an die Nacht - Hymns To the Night -was published in 1800.
    Novalis is supremely idealistic, far more so than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Heinrich Heine. He died young, which makes him, like Percy Shelley and John Keats, something of a hero (or martyr). He did not write as much as Shelley, but his work, like that of Keats or Arthur Rimbaud, promised much.
    Includes Novalis' Spiritual Songs, and an introduction to the poet.

    One of the most extraordinary poets of any era, Dickinson wrote a huge amount of poetry (nearly 2,000 poems). This new edition ranges from her early work to the late pieces.
    Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 - May 15, 1886) was born in Amherst, MA. Much of her later life was led in privacy, in the family home in Massachusetts. For some, she was a recluse, famous among locals for wearing white clothes, seldom travelled, preferred correspondence to meeting people in the flesh, and was known for talking to visitors thru a door. She wrote nearly 1800 poems, but only a few were published during her lifetime.
    The poetry of Emily Dickinson is among the strangest, the most compelling and the most direct in world literature. There is nothing else quite like it. Dickinson writes in short lyrics, often just eight lines long, often in regular quatrains, but often in irregular lines consisting of two half-lines joined in the middle by a dash (such as: ‘’Tis Honour - though I die’ in “Had I presumed to hope”). Her subjects appear to be the traditional ones of poetry, blocked in with capital letters: God, Love, Hope, Time, Death, Nature, the Sea, the Sun, the World, Childhood, the Past, History, and so on. Yet what exactly is Dickinson discussing? Who is the ‘I’, the ‘Thee’, the ‘we’ and the ‘you’ in her poetry? This is where things become much more ambiguous. Dickinson is very clear at times in her poetry, until one considers deeper exactly what she is saying - but this ambiguity is one of the hallmarks and the delights of her art.

    Thomas Hardy's poetry lies at the core of his artistic achievement. Or he would like to think so. For Hardy, though, the poetry is at the heart of his artistic life. It contains his deepest emotions, his thoughts on the most intimate matters. The poetry is, as Robert Graves said, a 'spiritual autobiography'.
    Thomas Hardy's poetry is sensual, physical, concise, lyrical, and personal. It is seemingly 'plain' and unadorned, yet it is full of an arcane vocabulary - 'tangled bine-stems' appear in 'The Darkling Thrush', for instance. Hardy loves the obscure word, some of them being culled from Dorset folklore and legend. He was also complex in his use of stanza forms. As W.H. Auden wrote: 'no English poet, not even Donne or Browning, employed so many and so complicated stanza forms'.

    Both Hardy and Powys created a poetic Wessex landscape. Hardy's Wessex has entered popular folklore and myth, and is used in the promotion of holidays, walks, tours, museums, hotels, even town councils. John Cowper Powys's Wessex, in A Glastonbury Romance and Weymouth Sands, among other novels, is less well-known: a place of secret corners, mossy walls, ancient earthworks, Somerset wetlands and ferny hollows. Both writers are discussed thematically for their sense of nature, mythology, philosophy, painting, sensualism, labour, folklore and the family. D.H.Lawrence is referenced throughout as a bridge between Hardy and Powys. Finally Robinson considers the film versions of Hardy's novels.
