    Andy Goldsworthy is a particularly gentle and sensitive artist: he stitches together leaves to forms lines, often placed in water, or makes circular slabs of snow, or entwines twigs in an arc. He creates a delicate spiral of chestnut leaves, called Autumn Horn; he pins bright yellow dandelions on willowherb stalks in a circle, on bluebells; he makes lines and cairns, like Richard Long, of pebbles; he makes hollow, circular structures, like igloos, from slate, leaves, driftwood and bracken; he makes long wavy ridges in Arizonan desert sand; he makes arches, globes, hollow spheres, slabs, spires, spirals and star-shapes out of snow and ice. Very impressive it all is. The sculptures made of sticks, for instance, stuck together in an arch, or a line, reflected in the mirror-like water of Derwent Water in Cumbria, are indeed wonderful. The sculptures exude tranquillity, an early morning calm. Or the globe made from oak leaves in various states of autumnal decay, superb stuff. Or the globe made out of snow, and perched amidst some young trees, or the slabs of snow, set up in a line with slits cut in them.

    Malpas surveys all of Goldsworthy's art, and analyzes his relation with other land artists such as Robert Smithson, Walter de Maria, Richard Long and David Nash, and his place in the contemporary British art scene.

    REVIEW ON AMAZON:

    I'm no expert on visual art, nor would I claim to be, but I found this to be a useful book, and the only one I've been able to find about the work of Andy Goldsworthy. The author has taken the time to round up a large amount of varied source material which makes this book well worth seeking out.

    A happily received gift. It's worth the price for one who wants a scholarly while earthy (sorry, couldn't help it) approach to the work. There's a quirkiness about the writing style that is engaging and honest. I'm glad I have the book and will reread it as I purchase other books on Goldsworthy where the work is shown via great photography.

    This study looks at the contemporary British artist, Andy Goldsworthy, and his work in the United States of America. Goldsworthy’s presence in America grew steadily with a series of exhibitions beginning in the late Nineties with the Storm King Wall and show.     The Art of Richard Long

    A new study of the British artist Richard Long, an important contemporary international artist.
    Richard Long walks. This is the central fact of his art. His work is founded on the art of walking, and on walking as art. His walks become 'artwalks', artwalks which become artworks. For Richard Long, (art)walking is (art)working. As he walks he works. He makes art-walk-works. Art-walking and artworking become interchangeable. Born in 1945, the same year as David Nash, Richard Long studied at the West of England College of Art (Bristol) and St Martin's (1966-68). In 1967 Long made his first important walk-work, A Line Made By Walking. Like most land artists, Long makes indoor (gallery) works and outdoor works (not intended for public consumption). He also produces art books, which are not typical exhibition catalogues, but artworks in their own right, usually with text works, photo works, and sometimes map works. Long's has had one-man shows at most of the major Western galleries, including the Whitechapel (1971), MOMA, New York (1972), Venice Biennale (1976), Arnolfini (1983), Fogg Art Museum (1980), Stedelijk, Amsterdam (1973), Guggenheim, New York (1986), Hayward Gallery, London (1991), and many one-man shows at Anthony d'Offay Gallery in London, which have produced art books (Mountains and Waters, 1992, Sixteen Works, 1984, Five, Six, Pick Up Sticks, 1980, Old World New World, 1988, Kicking Stones, 1990, River Avon Book, 1979).
    Richard Long is perhaps Britain's most successful 'nature' or 'land' artist and sculptor, with an international reputation. In 1987 he won the Turner Prize. Critics either love him or (like Peter Fuller) hate him. There is a sea of articles and magazines pieces on Richard Long, but this is one of the few full-length studies of his art.

    William Malpas has taught art at Goldsmiths' College and the University of Toronto. His books with Crescent Moon includeAndy Goldsworthy (1995), Richard Long (1995) and Land Art (1997). He lives in Gloucester.

    Richard Long is a British land artist and sculptor who works with and in the natural world, but also with and within the highly sophisticated, artificial and humanmade world of art and culture. 'I too wanted to make nature the subject of my work,' Long explained of his early work, 'but in new ways. I started working outside using natural materials like grass and water, and this evolved into the idea of making a sculpture by walking'.
    This book also considers topics such as contemporary and postwar art and sculpture; Richard Long’s contemporaries, including fellow British sculptors; and land art.
    In the course of this book William Malpas references many of Richard Long’s contemporary British sculptors (Tony Cragg, Bill Woodrow, David Nash, Barry Flanagan, Alison Wilding, Shirazeh Houshiary, Richard Wentworth, Boyd Webb, Hamish Fulton, Stephen Cox, Philip King, Anthony Caro, Tim Head, William Tucker, Anish Kapoor, Anthony Gormley, David Mach, Peter Randall-Page, Nicholas Pope and Gilbert & George).
    Further chapters include: one on women, feminist, body art and performance sculptors, as a comparison with Richard Long’s art, which has a strong component of performance (even if it’s nearly always private). Also, a consideration of gendered sculpture and art. In the chapter on Minimal, Conceptual, Process and other 1960s and post-1960s art and artists, I’m interested in the artists (primarily European and American) who have most in common with Richard Long’s art: the great Minimal and land artists, such as Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Carl Andre, Sol LeWitt, Dennis Oppenheim, James Turrell and Robert Ryman, and the important Conceptual artists, such as Hans Haacke, Bruce Nauman, Yves Klein and Lawrence Weiner.

    Andy Goldsworthy in Close-Up (Hardback)

    Andy Goldsworthy born in Cheshire in 1956. He studied at Harrogate High School, Bradford College of Art (the archetypal British art school ethics of liberalism, experimentation, art history discussions and the embrace of avant garde art prevailed here) and Preston Polytechnic, where he studied on the BA Fine Art course, graduating in 1978. Goldsworthy has lived mainly in the North of the UK: Bentham and Illkley (Yorkshire), Brough (Cumbria) and Penpont (Dumfriesshire). Many of Goldsworthy's site-specific works and commissions have been in the North: the giant maze and Lambton Earthwork (at County Durham, 1988-9), the Grizedale Forest site works (1984 onwards), residencies at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (1987), the Lake District National Park (1988), and so on. Goldsworthy has worked at the Venice Biennale, Grise Fiord and the North Pole, in Japan, Castres and Sidobre in France, and in Haarlem, Holland. He has had one-man shows in France, Japan, Holland and the UK, and participated in groups shows in Italy, Germany, and the USA. A major retrospective, Hand to Earth: Andy Goldsworthy: Sculpture: 1976-1990, was held at the Henry Moore Centre for the Study of Sculpture, Leeds City Art Gallery: the show also travelled to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, Stedelijke Musea, Gouda and Centre Regional d'Art Contemporain Midi-Pyrenees in Toulouse. Goldsworthy's work has appeared on TV (in, as expected, Channel Four documentaries, The Late Show, an Arts Council film (Two Autumns), and regional news programmes, as well as a couple of Japanese broadcasts), also the ubiquitous appearances on Radio 4's dull arts show Kaleidoscope and Radio 3's arts interview slot, Third Ear. A half-hour BBC TV programme on Goldsworthy's Sheepfolds project was aired in 1997; there was also a Sheepfolds exhibition at Michael Hue-Williams Gallery in London. In the 1990s, Goldsworthy's art began to rise in popularity: the glossy coffee table book Stone became a bestseller. In 1994 Goldsworthy took over some West End galleries with a large one-man show. In 1995 he took part in an intriguing group show at the British Museum, creating sculptures, along with Richard Deacon, Peter Randall-Page and others, in amongst the monumental statuary of the famous Egyptian Hall. Also in 1995, Goldsworthy designed a set of Royal Mail stamps. Goldsworthy continues to work in countries such as Japan, Australia, Canada and North America, France, but his home ground of Dumfriesshire in Scotland remains (at) the heart of his work.

    Colorfield, Minimal, Hard Edge and Post-Painterly Abstract painting had a distinctly American (and New York) flavour to it, even if it was not produced in America or by US artists. In Bruce Glaser's "Questions to Andre and Judd", Donald Judd continually stressed the point that the new (Minimal) art was definitely American and non-European. The New World not the Old World. Time and again Judd insisted that the new art was to trying to get away from the European tradition. 'It suits me fine if that's all down the drain', Judd said. 'I'm totally uninterested in European art and I think it's over with.'
    Many of the Colorfield and Sixties painters have made extremely brilliantly colorful works in the 1960s, then turned back to the sombre colors of grey and black in the late 1980s and 1990s. Painters such as Brice Marden, Frank Stella, Jasper Johns and Jules Olitski are ambiguous about saturated color: they moved back and forth from monochrome greys and blacks to full color. In the late 1980s and the 1990s, painters such as Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Jules Olitski and Larry Poons moved from bright color to muted monochrome. Mid-1990s works by Frank Stella were unpainted, using instead the natural colors of metal and wood; Brice Marden turned from his luscious monochromes of the 1970s and 1980s to the black-and-white of Chinese calligraphy in the Cold Mountain series and other works.

    AUTHOR’S NOTE: There are chapters on each of the key painters of the 1960s, whose works continue to inspire and entertain. I have revised the book for this edition, bringing it up to date. I hope readers will discover some new insights into many of their favourite artists.

    Minimal Art and Artists in the 1960s and After

    Some Minimalists have been taken up by feminists as icons (Eva Hesse). Some continued to work in mainly Minimal art throughout their careers (Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Brice Marden, Carl Andre), while others moved into Process art (Robert Morris), Conceptual art (Hans Haacke), performance art, body art, installation art, and feminist art (Judy Chicago). Some dipped in and out of Minimal art (Gerhard Richter). These artists, and the art they produced, form the main subject of this book.
    Terms for Minimalism like ‘reductionist’, ‘Rejective Art’, ‘non-hierarchical’, ‘non-relational’, ‘non-anthropomorphic’, ‘Gestalt’, ‘environmental’, ‘Serial’, ‘Cool art’, ‘Know-Nothing Nihilism’ and ‘Idiot Art’, were also employed. As Harold Rosenberg pointed out, few art movements had so many terms applied to it, and so many different definitions. For an art that was supposed to be about all things ‘minimal’, it attracted a lot of discussion. ‘The rule applied is: The less there is to see, the more there is to say’.
    Many of the chief Minimal artists were not only artists, they also wrote plenty, publishing articles in the art magazines (Artforum, Art In America, Arts Magazine, Avalanche - all the ‘A’s - were among the chief art mags of the era). The Minimalists who theorized at length on art included Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Ad Reinhardt, Dan Flavin, Robert Smithson and Carl Andre; they were well-known for their written statements. Indeed, their essays and articles have become some of the key texts of the era (rather than the critics, or the patrons, or novelists, journalists and writers).

    'Land art' is a term that includes a wide variety of artistic forms, like the term 'garden'. Gardens are not a single form with a single set of characteristics. Gardens can be so various that some critics have suggested that the word 'garden' is as broad and vague as words such as 'art'. Gardens can be very small or very large; they can be flat or terraced; they can be organized around a 'natural' plan or a strict geometric plan; they can be 'wild' or 'tamed'; they can be enclosed or open; they can contain lakes, ponds, streams, fountains, statues, trees, lawns, shrubs, rocks, walls, fences, benches, flowers, stones, follies, ruins, grottoes, temples, paths and many kinds of environmental art. A Japanese garden, with its stones and sand raked into patterns, is quite different from an English kitchen garden. Gardens can be vast displays of state and regal power, such as the garden as Versailles, or modest attempts at cultivating food in a backyard. Gardens have been made for many reasons: in the pursuit of decoration, finance, medicine, religion, contemplation, play, sport, and food. Isamu Noguchi thinks of gardens as 'sculpturing of space: a beginning, and a groping to another level of sculptural experience and use: a total sculpture space experience beyond individual sculptures.     Constantin Brancusi

    Constantin Brancusi is one of the greatest of all sculptors, and a key sculptor of the modern era, with Auguste Rodin and Pablo Picasso. Brancusi's influence can be seen in a wide range of Western sculptors, including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth, Minimalists and land artists.

    This new book studies the religious and mythical dimensions of Constantin Brancusi's distinctive scultpural forms, the 'eggs', 'fishes', 'heads' and 'columns'. His central quest was for the 'essence of things', which resulted in purifying a form until only the essence was left.
    It was Constantin Brancusi's project to strip away the detritus that had accumulated around sculpture, Henry Moore said, and to offer the pure, simple shape. What Brancusi did was 'to concentrate on very simple shapes, to keep his sculpture, as it were, one-cylindered, to refine and polish a single shape to a degree almost too precious.'
    As well as being a sculptor, Constantin Brancusi was also an accomplished photographer. Quite a few artists (not all of them sculptors) have expressed  for Brancusi's photographs, and the way he would set up his sculptures in his studio and photograph them at particular times of the day, when the lighting was just right. They are early examples of installation art (and some of the best, too). Andy Goldsworthy said he admired how Brancusi created the right conditions in his studio so that his work 'comes alive at a particular time of the day as the light momentarily touches it'. For Goldsworthy, Brancusi's works were at their best when they were arranged by the sculptor in his studio and photographed. Somehow, it wasn't quite the same when they were displayed in modern art museums (such as the Pompidou Centre in Paris or the Museum of Modern Art in Gotham, which have important Brancusi pieces).

    ERIC GILL (1882-1940) is one of the major erotic artists of the 20th century, and one of the key British modern artists. Gill is still a controversial figure in art. His personal life was notorious for its sexual relationships. Wyndham Lewis called his work 'excellent and ribald', while influential critic Roger Fry, one of Gill's supporters, said Gill's sculpture was 'the outcome of a desire to express something felt in the adventure of human life.'
    For Eric Gill, eroticism was a vital part of life, and should be openly displayed in art. He moved from nudes to Madonnas easily and simply: sex and religion were part of the same mystery for him.
    Eric Gill built eroticism into most of his depictions of people. 'Quite mad on sex', Gill wrote of Jacob Epstein, the sculptor, in his diary (December 9, 1913). The statement might equally apply to Gill. He thought of sex a lot, to put it mildly.
    Eric Gill has become a familiar figure in British modern art and life. He certainly looked the part of the Bohemian artist with his little skull caps, imitation monk’s habits, artist’s smocks and his penchant for bare feet and sandals (an early hippy? Yep). In his Fabian Society, Arts and Crafts and socialist period, Gill was described (in Blackfriars, 1941) by John Middleton Murry, a key member of D.H. Lawrence’s circle, as a ‘silent figure in a shabby mackintosh’ who rolled his own cigarettes. Gill the Monk. Saint Gill.
    For Eric Gill, eroticism was a vital part of life, and should be openly displayed in art. He moved from nudes to Madonnas easily and simply. The problematic and erotic relation between life and art, between the human beloved and the art object, is vividly expressed in the way Eric Gill started working in sculpture.

    REVIEW FROM AMAZON:

    The issue consumed much of feminists' attention in the 1970s and 80s then - as the author points out with some sense of longing - the discussion faded into the background. Hoyland cheerfully brings the topic back to the table as his basis for discussing Gill's life and work. Gill gives the discussion plenty to work with. A large sector of his œuvre praises the unclad female form. Quite a few works feature couples coupling, sometimes with male genital exaggerations that call Japanese shunga to mind.

    The American artist Brice Marden (b. 1938) is one of the great contemporary painters.

    Brice Marden's first works were the Minimalist monochrome panels of the 1960s, large, austere, 'implacable' oil and wax paintings characterized by a precise coolness. In 1975 Marden had a one-man show at the Guggenheim Museum.
    Laura Garrard looks at Marden's artistic career, from the early works, the multi-panel works of the 1970s, the Sea Paintings, Grove Group, Greek and landscape works, and the 'Annunciation Series' and Thira.
    In the 1980s, Brice Marden developed a 'calligraphic' or 'Oriental' art, which appeared in many prints as well as large canvases.
    Brice Marden studied at Florida Southern College, Lakeland, and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1961. That year, he worked at Yale Norfolk Summer School in Connecticut. In 1963 he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Yale University at New Haven. He moved to New York City, and worked as a guard in the Jewish Museum. At this time he was married to Pauline Baez, the sister of Joan Baez, the singer, and had a son, Nicholas.

    American artist Jasper Johns was born in 1930 in Augusta, Georgia, and  grew up in Allendale, South Carolina. He moved to New York City in 1949,  where he remained for much of his life (more recently he has lived in  Connecticut). Johns was associated with artists such as Marcel Duchamp,  one of his heroes, and Robert Rauschenberg, with whom he lived in 1950s.  His ?rst solo show was in 1958 (at Leo Castelli in Gotham). Johns has  become one of the U.S.A.’s premier artists, guaranteed a mention in any  critical study or art history book of modern art and contemporary art,  American art, and avant garde art.
    Jasper Johns’ reputation was greatly enhanced in the late Eighties by  the boom in the economics of the art world: on November 9, 1988, Johns’  White Flag fetched $7 million in a sale of the Burton and Emily Tremaine  collection. Johns’ False Start went for $17 million the following day, from  Victor W. Ganz’s collection. These were huge prices for a living artist.
    Jasper Johns works very closely with his paintings, becoming absorbed  totally in the surfaces, as a his friend Michael Crichton wrote:
     

    when he is working, Jasper is totally concentrated on those surfaces. He lives  in those surfaces. The surfaces are his whole world, they are everything. He  loses himself in them. They are everything.


    Jasper Johns works intuitively, instinctively: ‘One works without thinking  how to work,’ he has said. And: ‘I have no ideas about what the paintings  imply about the world. I don't think that's a painter's business. He just  paints paintings without a conscious reason.’ Johns has faith in the power  of the unconscious: it would work out what needed to be done: ‘The thing  is, if you believe in the unconscious - and I do - there's room for all kinds  of possibilities that I don't know how you prove one way or another.’

    Beato Angelico is the Quattrocento painter of Florence whose Annunciations, Enthroned Madonnas and San Marco frescoes are amongst the greatest works of the Renaissance. Rosalind Mutter founds her reading of Angelico on the San Marco Museum in Florence, with its deeply moving series of monk's cells and frescoes. The author interprets Fra Angelico as one of the greatest religious artists of any era, whose simple, bright and holy images are among the most profound in Western art.

    Fra Angelico, known by various names, including Fra Giovanni Beato Angelico da Fiesole (1399?-1455), is one of the very few painters of the Italian Renaissance who painted religious pictures exclusively. Almost all Angelico's paintings are religious - he did not paint secular portraits, like, say, Giovanni Bellini or Ghirlandaio. It was Vasari who stressed Angelico's purity, holiness, faith, humility and devout nature, and this description of Angelico as a holy monk-like painter persists throughout the centuries. John Ruskin called Angelico 'an inspired saint'.
    It is in San Marco in Florence that Angelico's 'saintly' reputation was forged. He (with assistants) painted fifty frescoes at San Marco. The paintings reveal a traditional form of Christian worship: Angelico's is a conventional kind of Christian theology and devotion. Some critics emphasize Angelico as a stylist. Of course, Angelico did not separate style from content in the way modern critics do. Clearly, they are part of the same thing. For the Renaissance religious painter, the aim is to come up with a style, colouration and technique which accords with one's beliefs, as well as flattering the faith of one's patrons. So Angelico's 'sweet style' stems from his blending of painterly technique with religious understanding.
    Fra Angelico stands at the transition between the mediaeval and Renaissance worlds. Angelico's 'feelings are in the Middle Ages', Bernard Berenson wrote, yet he was distinctly a Quattrocento, Renaissance painter. His art combines the timelessness and rigidity of icon painting, where figures are caught in bright, static, hieratic motions, with the new painterly explorations (in form, style and space) of the Quattrocento period.
